Intel's mainstream processor line has gone by the brand name Core for many years.&nbsp; These chips are built to excel at everyday tasks while also being affordable, and the models that we carry offer some of the best per-core clock speeds and single-threaded performance available. The latest 12th Gen Core models from Intel are the first x86 chips to include different types of cores on the same die: fast "big" cores for high performance tasks, with high clock speeds and Hyper-Threading technology, and efficient "little" cores that use less power for low priority and background tasks. Combined with the updated thread scheduler in Windows 11, and running on new chipsets like Z690, this design enables both higher processing speeds and better efficiency than previous generations. For users who need even more cores, higher memory capacities, or support for more than one video card (GPU) we also offer workstations based on Intel's Xeon processors.

Offering up to 16 cores while maintaining high clock speeds, Ryzen excels in most applications and covers a wide range of price points as well. If you want something bigger, AMD's Threadripper CPUs offer even more cores, memory channels, and PCI-E lanes. AMD's latest Ryzen 5000 Series is focused on providing the best per-core performance, while maintaining the excellent multi-threaded processing which AMD has become known for. Increases to turbo clock speeds and instructions per clock enable fantastic single-threaded results, while the updated Zen 3 architecture includes an improved design for the chip internally. &nbsp;

Threadripper is the name of AMD's high-end desktop (HEDT) processor line, aimed at demanding workstation applications. These chips offer massive numbers of cores, and applications like ray-tracing which can scale well across all of those cores will see unrivaled performance. Besides pure processing power, these CPUs also support quad-channel memory and enough PCI-Express lanes to hook up multiple GPUs, high-speed SSDs, and other expansion cards. If you are looking for a scaled back option, but still with solid performance and a good feature set, check out the more mainstream AMD Ryzen models. AMD's 3rd Gen Threadripper processors use the new Zen 2 microarchitecture, bringing substantial improvements over the previous models in this family. The Threadripper line already featured very high core counts, and combined with massively better per-core performance, these are very powerful workstation CPUs.

Like most software developers, Adobe maintains a list of system requirements for Photoshop and Lightroom that can be used to help ensure the hardware in your computer system will work with their software. However, most "system requirements" lists tend to cover only the very basics of what hardware is needed to run the software, not what hardware will actually give the best performance. The processor (or CPU) is one of the most important pieces of a Photoshop / Lightroom workstation. While GPU acceleration is gaining traction, right now your choice of CPU is usually going to make a much larger impact on overall system performance. However, be aware a CPU that is theoretically more powerful is not always better since there is a limit to the number of cores that Photoshop can effectively take advantage of. In many cases, spending more money can actually result in worse performance so it is more important to get the right CPU over a more expensive one.

However, most "system requirements" lists tend to cover only the very basics of what hardware is needed to run the software, not what hardware will actually give the best performance. While GPU acceleration is gaining traction, right now your choice of CPU is usually going to make a much larger impact on overall system performance. However, the way that After Effects Premier Pro or Davinci uses the CPU means that it is difficult to be sure of how a given processor will perform just from looking at clock speed and core count - which is exactly why we perform testing on a wide range of hardware.

Like most software developers, Autodesk maintains a list of system requirements for various versions of AutoCAD that can be used to help ensure the hardware in your system will work with AutoCAD. However, most "pc requirements" lists tend to cover the required hardware, not what hardware would actually give the best performance. When it comes to CPUs there are two main specifications that define the capability of a CPU:&nbsp; The frequency directly affects how many operations a single CPU core can complete in a second (how fast it is).&nbsp; The number of cores is how many physical cores there are within a CPU (how many operations it can run simultaneously).&nbsp; Whether a higher frequency or higher core count is faster depends on how well a program is designed to take advantage of multiple CPU cores. In the case of AutoCAD, the majority of the software is only single threaded so it is only able to utilize a single core of the CPU. For this reason, our general recommendation when choosing a processor is to get the highest frequency. For current generation CPUs, that is Intel's Core i9 12900K or i7 12700K, both of which offer high clock speeds alongside a good number of cores (for multitasking, etc).
